Inland Fisheries

The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist maintains a freshwater fish hatchery namely the Bilar Multi-species Freshwater Fish Hatchery within the vicinity of the Bohol Island State University, Bilar Campus. The facility has a dual purpose, production of Tilapia and African Hito fry or fingerlings as well as learning center for students and fisherfolks who wish to study technologies on production of culture fisheries.

As of December 2022, the facility collected 433,100 pieces of tilapia fry and dispersed around 400,950 pieces to tilapia growers all throughout the province. Due to high demand of tilapia, the facility can only disperse fry and not fingerlings which are weeks older and high survival rate. The policy of the facility is to provide 500 pieces of free tilapia fry while the fry beyond 500 pieces will be paid at a very affordable rate which resulted in total sales of 52,705.00 pesos. The facility already served 113 beneficiaries in total.

Marine Fisheries

            In terms of Marine Fisheries, 53 units of Bangus Fish Cages were turned over to fisherfolk peoples organizations amounting to 15 million, 516 units of fishing gears turned-over amounting to 2.9 million pesos, 130 units of fry dozer distributed amounting to 536,000 pesos and 470 sacks of fish feeds were procured for the feeding of breeders at the Bilar Freshwater Hatchery.

The Bangus Hatchery situated at the BISU Clarin Campus is already at 50% completion which will produce bangus fingerlings in the future. A similar bangus hatchery will also be constructed at BISU Calape Campus this year.

The OPA has delivered 2 units of cold room to LGU Talibon and LGU Ubay respectively along with 2 units Ice Maker, 2 units Ice Crusher and 1,300 pieces Fish Banyera at San Roque, Talibon and BOATech Ubay, Gabi Ubay amounting to 4.9 million pesos.

In partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), stocking of bangus fingerlings was done in 36 units of fish cages provided by OPA with 8 Peoples Organization beneficiaries and ultimately produced 7,585 kilograms of Bangus which were sold in their respective wet markets.

A number of personnel from the fisheries division were sent to attend a Fiberglass Boat Fabrication Training last November 7-30, 2022 at the BFAR Facility in Bentig, Calape. The training aims to train staff from OPA on the proper fabrication of fiberglass boats to hasten distribution of said boats to fisherfolks in the future.

MARKETING ASSISTANCE

Price monitoring in wet markets of Cogon, Dao, Justicor, Alturas Mall, ICM, Causeway, Panglao, Dauis, Calape, Loon, Albur, Talibon, Ubay, Sagbayan, Bien Unido, Mabini, Candijay, Alicia, Carmen, Guindulman, Bilar and Anda. About 22 markets were monitored if fish price were in lie with the suggested retail price set by DA.  Data gather in said price monitoring activities were used as basis for the pricing of fish supply under the ISDA Program of the Provincial Government of Bohol through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist.

A 40-foot Cold Storage turned-over by the National Government was finally transported from the port of Tagbilaran at the Old Airport to be utilized as storage for fish supply under the ISDA Program that will be marketed to consumers at an affordable price.

Another notable accomplishment is the successful passing of Mr. John Russel A Jumawan from Cantiguib, Albur for the qualifying exam for Youth Internship Program in Japan assisted by personnel from the marketing assistance section.
