GUV awards best school and household farmers
Bohol’s model school vegetable raisers and household farmers harvested honors from the provincial government in awarding rites led by Gov. Edgar Chatto at the ICM Activity Center in Tagbilaran City on Tuesday, April 3, 2018.
They are the provincial and district winners of the yearly searches for the Modelong Gulayan sa Paaralan and Bahay Kubo FAITH-HOPE-CHARITY Best Practices.
The FAITH means Food Always In The Home; HOPE, Herbal Ornamental Plant Enhancement; and CHARITY, Chicken Always In The Yard.
The food raising programs are initiatives of the provincial government under Chatto through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA), which is headed by its officer-in-charge, Larry Pamugas.
At the same time, the programs raise community awareness of the essence of growing food through school gardening and backyard farming to help ensure food sufficiency right at the household level.

FRUIT SEED, FISH CONTESTS LAUNCHED. Chatto launched also during the awarding of two more annual competitions, the Kinadaghanang Liso and Palaisdaan sa Paaralan, for 2018.
The contests are still in coordination with the DepEd Bohol and Tagbilaran City Divisions and DA-7, with the participation this time of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) under its head, Leo Bongalos.
Pamugas said the said contest encourages the schools or their students to collect as many fruit seeds, which will be submitted to his office for weighing to determine the quantity of the collection in one year.
As in the existing competitions, cash prizes will be given to the winners who collect the highest quantity of fruit seeds.
The seeds will be propagated at the nurseries of the OPA for fruit planting materials that are always available for distribution province-wide, Pamugas said.
Chatto said the contest not just encourages the school children to eat more fruits and earn the seeds. It also pursues the thrust of the province to grow fruit trees for economic and environmental values.
Alongside eco-tourism and information communications technology, agriculture stays as one of Bohol’s major economic pillars. (Ven rebo Arigo)
