Japonica rice farmers eye good quality rice

In realizing their vision which is share agricultural Technologies,” the South Korean Government through the Korea Program on International Agriculture (KOPIA) and the Provincial Government of Bohol (PGBh) through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist  (OPA) has been conducted the series of lectures for Japonicarice farmers  in Bohol aiming at producing good quality and high yield Japonica rice. There were more than 50 farmers participated during the one –day lecture last Tuesday held at the Montesuerte Gym, Carmen, Bohol coming from Lucky Mountain Farmers Association, and Montesuerte Small Farmers and Irrigators Association in Montesuerte, Carmen, Bohol.

Marjoe Rey Labonite who represented Assistant Provincial Agriculturist Larry M. Pam gas who was at that time attended the budget hearing at the Provincial Capitol said the purpose of the activity is o create a clicheamong Boholanos in engaging Japonica rice farming in the province.

Labonite bared that aside from the lecture and of the giving of technologies, there were also Japonica Rice Farmers Field Days on Japonica Rice in seeds Multiplication and adoptability trials  held in Catoogan, Trinidad; Gabi, Ubay; San Isidro , Pilar and in Katipunan, Carmen, Bohol.

It may be recalled that during the Japonica Rice Farmers Field Days, Dr. Pam gas urged the Boholano farmers to plant Japonica rice because there is a bright future in rice farming considering of its good quality and high price which is favorite among the tourists.

Pamugas said the price of Japonica Palay is now P30 per kilo while the milled rice is P120/kilo which could greatly help the farmers to earn an additional income.

Dr. Sam Lee, Saemaul Undong Expert who gave the lecture on rural transformation said that this project s within the ambit of their vision which is the sharing of agricultural technologies which has been given to other countries to include the Philippines whom the South Korean people had owed a lot during the Korean War in 1950’s wherein at that time the Philippine government sent Filipino soldiers to help them in fighting their enemies.

He said that after the war the South Korea was one of the poorest nations in the world until such time that South Korea President Park Chung-hee on 1970 launched Saemaul Undong Movement.

Lee said this movement helped Korea to become one of the developed countries in the world.

He added that the Korean experience and success story of Saemaul Undong is now a universal model for development which contributes to the eradication of global poverty and promote sustainable development.

Lee emphasized that this project in Bohol aims to expand and develop the Japonica rice farming that patterned in the Saemaul Undong of Korea following the three basic Saemaul Spirits: diligence, self-help and cooperation.

He explained that if the right technologies for Japonica rice would be followed through the Saemaul Undong spirits it would surely create a cliché in engaging rice farming.

Lee mentioned the technologies to be applied for Japonica rice such as: continued supplies of water, the rice paddies have no history of pests and diseases, the soils are rich in organic matters, synchronized planting in neighboring farms, proper farm sanitation, on time application of fertilizers, maintain its seeds purity by removing of off types, harvesting time (85% maturity) and dry within 24 hours after harvest

Renerio Makinano for and in behalf of Gov. Edgar M. Chatto thanked the Korean Government in helping the province in the field of agriculture.

Makinano assured the Japonica Rice Farmers that the PGBh under Gov. Chatto has no let up to give more interventions for the upliftment of their livelihood.

He also urged the Boholano farmers to be ready to feed the increasing numbers of the population once the Bohol Panglao International Airport will be operational this year.

Municipal Agriculturist Arlene D. Cabusao of Carmen who represented Mayor Ricardo Francisco Toribio in her message of support said she considered the activity as a graet opportunity for the rice farmers in Carmen.

She also thanked the Korean Government, PGBh as well as the farmers for making the activity a success.

The next Saemaul Undong Lecture for Japonica Rice Farmers will be conducted in Talibon on September 24, 2018.

The Chatto administration has its own version of movement which is the so-called Countryside Development Program-Purok Power Movement (CDP-PPM) that brings the government closer to the people down to the Purok level of which other provinces in the country wanted to replicate.
