Dimiao Ubi grower bags most of PinakaUbitilts

The Ubi grower from the town of Dimiao bagged most of the Pinaka contest of different Ubi varieties as one of
the several contests highlighted the month-long celebration of Ubi Festival 2021 in the New Norm at the Old City
Airport, Tagbilaran City.
Allan T. Madronero from Malijao, Dimiao won three of the seven varieties. These were Tam-isanwhich weighed
20.8 kilograms (kgs.); Kabus-ok, 9.8kgs.; and Binanag, 8.8 kgs.
As each variety has a prize of P5,000, Madronero would receive P15, 000 during the awarding and closing
ceremony of the festival on February 24, 2021 at the Old City Airport.
Other winners of the contest were ArnulfoCalag from Baclayon for his biggest UbiKinampay weighing 10.8
kgs., EsmeraldoMaligsa from Corella – Binugas(7.2 kgs.), Jacky Gonzales from San Miguel – Baligonhon (17.2
kgs.), and Nicolas Cabusao of Carmen – Iniling (6.8 kgs.).
The Pinaka contest of the different varieties of Ubi in Bohol gave the real meaning of the celebration as Bohol is
known for Ubi especially the UbiKinampay which is more aromatic compared to other provinces.
Rosanna G. Lamdagan, Head, Agri-Business Division, Office of the Provincial Agriculturist(OPA) said that
conducting different contests with big prizes at stake will encourage Boholano farmers to engage Ubi farming.
Other contests being conducted were Most Outstanding Ubi growers, Highest Volume of Ubi Display,
UbiBalitaw, Del Horest and Sarah Geronimo voices alike, cooked Ubi Eating, Tabirak Eating, Motorcade and
BugnosaRondalla contests.
In the opening program last January 25, 2021, Gov. Art C. Yap underscored the efforts of the Ubi growers in
expanding and sustaining the Ubi industry in Bohol.
The governor keeps urging growers to till more areas for Ubi to produce more tubers.
Bohol Ubi Growers Association (BUGA) President EsmeraldoMaligsa said that association records show the
number of farmers engaged in Ubi farming is increasing.
Maligsa stressed that they have more yield of Ubi this harvest season as evident by the increase in Ubi tubers
displayed at the festival.
He thanked the provincial government for the Ubidispersal program of which they had given more than 11,000

2nd Day Ubi Festival in the New Norm

The second day of the Ubi Festival 2021 in the New Norm showcasing the different varieties of Ubi in Bohol especially the “Kinampay” and other agri-commodities at the Old City Airport in Tagbilaran City had full of so many activities.As early as 8:00 in the morning, the buyers trooped at the festival to buy Ubi products and other agri-commodities, plants from the plantitos/plantitas and favorite Boholano delicacies that would end at 8:30 pm.After lunch, there were different contests being conducted to highlight the celebration such Ubi Balitaw, Del Horest and Sarah Geronimo Voices Alike, Cooked Ubi Eating, Tabirak Eating and Pinaka Contest that would really give happiness to the exhibitors, buyers, and all the people inside the venue.At 6:00 in the evening, the people inside the Old City Airport were entertained by the different bands while eating at the food fair.The month-long celebration will end on February 24, 2021 wherein the awarding and closing program will be conducted of which the winners of all the contests will be given their prizes.#Ubifestival2021#InTheNewNorm

Ubi Festival Opening Program

Work group assures to follow protocol during Ubi Fest ‘21

The Provincial Technical Working Group (PTWG) on Ubi Festival ’21 in the New Norm assured the public that
strict implementation of the basic protocols is a must in conducting the festival slated on January 25 to February 24,
2021, at the Old City Airport, Tagbilaran City to avoid the possible spread of coronavirus.
This was stressed by Assistant Provincial Agriculturist Larry M. Pamugas who led the PTWG in conducting the
three preparatory meetings.
Dr. Pamugas said that Gov. Art C. Yap has directed the PTWG to draw measures ensuring the conduct of the Ubi
Festival in the New Norm to avoid affliction of the dreaded disease.
Pamugas disclosed that part of the measure they have drawn is the holding of the fest at the Old City Airport
where social distancing can be properly observed considering its wide area.
In fact, he said that the distance between exhibitor booths is 10 meters while two meters for the table with
barriers for the sellers and buyers.
He said that the wearing of a facemask is a must and upon entering the venue, guests should undergo a
temperature check, hand washing with alcohol, foot bath before filling up log sheets for contact tracing.
Inside the venue, he clarified that they will follow the 50 percent allowable capacity wherein the members of the
Philippine National Police (PNP) and Provincial Security Force (PSF) would help in controlling the number of
people from getting inside.
The month-long festival carries the theme “Pagpananum ug Ubi Napuslan, Kagutom nga Dala sa COVID-19
Nabatukan” will kick off with a motorcade on January 25, 2021, 1 p.m. from the Capitol Grounds – New Capitol
Site Road – Hangos Street – J.A. Clarin St. – City Hall Grounds – Calceta Street – J.A. Clarin St. – CPG Avenue –
City Airport Road/ Benigno Aquino Road down to the Old City Airport for the formal opening of the program.
In the opening program, Gov. Yap will lead in the giving of messages and the opening of exhibits.

SLATED CONTESTS

Aside from the usual activities of selling Ubi products and other agri-commodities, ornamental and flowering
plants (plantitos/plantitas), the Ubi Festival in the New Norm will be savored with different contests such as the
highest volume of Ubi display, Pinaka of different Ubi varieties, outstanding Ubi growers, cooked Ubi Eating, Ubi
Tabirak eating, Motorcade and literary musical contests (Bugno sa Rondalla, Ubi Balitaw, Del Horest and Sarah
Geronimo voices alike.
Other activities to highlight the festival are the nightly entertainment, food fair, techno fora, Ubi cook off, arnis
demo and Zumba.
Esmeraldo Maligsa, Bohol Ubi Growers Association (BUGA) president said that they have enough supply of Ubi
tubers to be sold at the festival of which the Ubi Kinampay can be bought at P90 per kilo and P70 for other varieties.
Maligsa said that BUGA which has more than 100 members and other Boholano Ubi growers have experienced a
good harvest this season.
The Ubi Festival has been institutionalized through an ordinance in the province aimed to recognize and award
farmers who have been helping the provincial government to expand and sustain the Ubi industry in Bohol. (Atoy

4-day ART Tabo sa Bohol starts tom’row

Starting tomorrow the Agri-fishery Retail Terminal (ART) Tabosa Bohol to be held at the CPG Park,
Cogon, Tagbilaran City fronting Bohol Wisdom School every Monday and Thursday will be conducted
on four days a week.
Rosanna G. Lamdagan, Chief-Agribusiness Division, OPA said that the additional two days have
scheduled on every Tuesday and Friday.
Lamdagan, said that the four-day ART Tabosa Bohol aims to decongest the buyers who have been
trooped at the Tabo to buy the farm gate prices of agri-fishery commodities coming from our Boholano
farmers.
Gov. Art. C. Yap upon knowing the successful operation of the ART Tabosa Bohol which was started
last May 18, 2020 wherein the total gross sales from among the farmers/ traders would reach to P20M, he
directed Dr. Larry M. Pamugas, officer-in-charge, OPA to study that the program would be conducted
daily.
Lamdagan said that ensure that the minimum health protocols such as; social distancing and wearing
of facemasks and face shields be strictly implemented at the Tabo, the PGBH has assigned some members
of the Provincial Security Force (PSF) in the area.
At start, the ART Tabosa Bohol was conducted only on Monday but due to the adamant request from
the buying public to include the senior citizens, the PGBh has granted the request to hold twice a week
every Monday and Thursday.
At the ART Tabosa Bohol, the buyers to include some senior citizens accompanied by relatives
trooped at the Tabo to buy agri-fishery commodities such as: rice, fish, vegetables, spices, fruits, dressed
chicken, eggs, favourite Boholano delicacies, dried fish and other agricultural products at cheaper prices
than those at the public markets and malls.
Gov. Yap has reiterated that the program also encouraged the Boholano farmers to expand their farms

Meanwhile, Romero said that the PCA and the coco farmers are now doing their best to revive the
coconut industry in Bohol.
The PCA Manager bared that he is elated on the development for the active participation of the coco-
farmers on the plans and programs of the PCA.
He said that Bohol Coconut Development Council (BCDC) headed by its Chairman former Vice
Governor DionisioBalite has been very determined to strengthen the coco farmers’ organizations.
Romero said BCDC has scheduled the consultative road show with municipal presidents of coconut
farmers associations of which last Thursday morning the road show was conducted at Bohol Institute of
Technology (BIT) – Jagna participated by the coco farmer presidents from Lila, Dimiao, Valencia, Garcia
Hernandez, Jagna, Duero, Guindulman, Anda, Mabini andCandijay and in the afternoon at BIT-Main
Tagbilaranattended by farmer presidents from Tagbilaran, Albur, Baclayon, Corella, Sikatuna, Antequera,
Balilihan, Catigbian, Dauis, Panglao, Cortes, Maribojoc, Loon, Calape, Tubigon, Clarin, San Isidro,
Loboc, Sevila, and Loay.
On Wednesday, the consultative road show will be conducted in the morning at BIT-Talibon with
coco farmers’ presidents from the municipalities of President Carlos P. Garcia, Ubay, Trinidad, Talibon,
Getafe, Buenavista, Danao, Bien Unido, and Inabanga. While in the afternoon it will be held at BIT-
Carmen with farmer presidents from Carmen, Pilar, Sierra-Bullones, Batuan, Pilar, Sagbayan, Alicia,
Dagohoy, and San Miguel, Romero added.
He said the province of Bohol has 104,000 hectares (has.) planted with 10 million coconut trees by
33,000 coconut farmers. The towns with vast areas planted with coconuts are Balilihan, Antequera,
Valencia, Garcia Hernandez, Ubay and Inabanga.
Romero urged the Boholanos to plant coconut, saying PCA Bohol has now not less than 100,000
coconut seedlings of different varieties nursed in Ubay Seed Garden, Calanggaman, Ubay.
He revealed that the buying prices of copra now are P17.50 per kilo for the “Pasa” (farm gate price)

Tabo sa Plaza resumes

The “Tabo sa Plaza,” one of the activities of the Provincial Government of Bohol (PGBh) facilitated by the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) will resume operations on March 18, 2020, in its new location at the back of the new Capitol Building.
Latest developments came after the previous “Tabo” was temporarily stopped since February last year due to the on-going renovation of the Plaza Rizal in front of the old capitol.
Dr. Larry M. Pamugas, Officer-In-Charge, OPA said that the purpose of this endeavor is to assist farmers market their farm products and set up link with institutional buyers.
Pamugas stressed that this will also cater to the needs of the Boholano buying public to include capitol employees to buy the farm products at a lower price compared to that in the market.
He said that in the Tabo sa Plaza, “we can buy the naturally grown vegetables and pork meat, Boholano favorite delicacies (suman, budbod, poto, bingka, galang-galang) and rice among others from our exhibitors which are the following: Kapunungan sa mga Bol-anong Organikong Mag-uuma (KBoOM), Association of Individual Moving (AIM) for Progress in Balilihan, FCB Foundation, Bohol Association of Natural Livestock Growers (BANaLiG), Jagna Small Enterprises Development (JSED) and other individual entrepreneurs”.
Pamugas thanked Gov. Art C. Yap for granting the use of the back portion of the capitol where the tents are installed as the venue for the display of farm products from the exhibitors every Wednesday.
To date, there is no assurance yet if the operation of the Tabo sa Plaza will be backed at the Plaza Rizal once the renovation has been completed as preferred by the exhibitors because it is accessible for the buying public especially to the churchgoers. (Atoy Cosap)

20th Ubi Festival a success

The four-day 20th Ubi Festival in the province of Bohol had conducted successfully with the Department of Agriculture Secretary William D. Dar as a keynote speaker and the enthusiasm showed by the 27 exhibitors and the happy faces of the winners of the different contests.
Dr. Larry M. Pamugas, Officer-In-Charge, Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) said the Ubi Festival held at the Bohol Agricultural Promotion Center, Dao, Tagbilaran City last January 28-31, 2020 as the venue wherein the DA Sec. Dar turned over and committed to allocate P380 million worth of agriculture and fishery programs and projects to the province of Bohol.
Sec. Dar also led the awarding of P60 million worth of various agri-machineries, inputs and projects, under the Special Area for Agriculture Development (SAAD) program; P106 million composed of imbued seeds distribution, agri-machineries for 100 farmers (P80M), and training and extension (P10M), to acting Governor Rene L. Relampagos.
The festival was savored by the different contests with big prizes at stake.

The Officer-In-Charge of OPA said the sum of P2M has been allocated by the PGBh to buy planting materials for Ubi dispersal to boost the Ubi industry in Bohol.

Ubi Festival sets on Jan. 28-31

The Provincial Government of Bohol (PGBh) through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) will once again celebrate the Ubi Festival on January 28-31, 2020 at the City Hall/Bohol-Agricultural Promotion Center (B-APC) Grounds, Dao, Tagbilaran City.

Dr. Larry M. Pamugas, Officer-in-Charge, OPA said the four-day activity is the annual event of the provincial government which aims to showcase the different varieties of Ubi especially the Kinampay, to create markets between the Ubi growers and traders, and to recognize and awards the Boholano farmers who have been engaging the Ubi farming in Bohol.

Dr. Pamugas said the festival would be highlighted with the different contests with big prizes at stake such as: pinaka (Ubi tubers harvested), best booth, Ubi eating, highest volume of Ubi display, best new Ubi processed products (pasalubong/ snack), and the literary and musical contests (Gary Valenciano voice and look alike, bugno sa rondalya, and Ubi balak contests for farmers and youth categories).

The officer-in-charge of the provincial agriculture office said that he already created the different committees to do the ground working which are the following; invitation, program, exhibits, physical arrangement, decoration and after care, secretariat, food awards and prizes, documentation and agri-info exhibits, finance, contest, motorcade, publicity and promotion.

Pamugas said that on Tuesday at 8 a.m. he scheduled the Ubi Festival preparatory meeting to be held at the Panda Tea Garden, Dao, Tagbilaran City to be attended by the Municipal Agriculturist/Municipal Agricultural Officer (MA/MAO); heads or representatives from Department of Agriculture-Provincial Agricultural Technology Coordinating Office (DA-PATCO), Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), OPA assisted non-government associations to solicit their commitment to participate in the display of their Ubi products.

Pamugas added that prior to the preparatory meeting there will be a brainstorming meeting tomorrow, 1 p.m. at his office in the Bohol Capitol Building to be participated by all the chairmen of the different committees to gather some new ideas to be presented during the preparatory meeting to make the festival be more meaningful and successful.

Rosanna G. Lamdagan, chief-Agribusiness Division, OPA is hopeful that more exhibitors would participate to display their Ubi products this coming festival compare from the usual 20 municipalities of the past years’ celebrations.

Earlier the Bohol Ubi Growers Association (BUGA) vowed to participate and strongly support the incoming festival saying that aside from displaying their Ubi products at the booths of their Local Government Units (LGUs), they set aside their products to be displayed at the BUGA booth.

Lamdagan said the celebration would pave the way to create the markets between the Ubi growers and the buyers/traders and as such the Ubi industry would sustain and flourish. (Atoy Cosap)

Prov’l. gov’t. prepares for Ubi fest next month

The Provincial Government of Bohol (PGBh) through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) is now in the preparation for the Ubi Festival to be conducted on the 3rd week of January next year.

Rosanna G. Lamdagan, chief, Agribusiness Division, OPA said that a preparatory meeting is scheduled on January 7, 2020 of which the venue is yet to be identified and to be attended by the Municipal Agricultural Officer/Municipal Agriculturist (MAO/MA), Agricultural Technician (AT-HVCCDP), Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), Department of Agriculture – Provincial Agricultural Technology Coordinating Office (DA-PATCO), Department of Education (Bohol and City Divisions) and all the six division chiefs of OPA.

Lamdagan said that in the meeting, the attendees would participate in the drafting of the theme and fixing the exact dates of the festival, andinforming the attendees on the different categories of the contests.

Usually, the different categories of the Ubi fest are the following: highest volume of Ubi tubers displayed, Ubikuradang contest (farmers & students), best Ubi booth/ Ubi exhibit contest, pinaka (the best of Ubi harvest), Ubi jingle contest, Ubibalak (farmers and students), voices alike, Ubieating challenge, and motorcade contests with big prizes at stake.

The PGBh through the OPA expects more participation from the municipal local government units (MLGUs) in the Ubi Festival 2020 to showcase the different categories of Ubi such as;Kinampay, Baligonhon,Kabus-ok, Binanag,Gimnay, Binato, Iniling, and Tam-isan.

Earlier the Bohol Ubi Growers Association (BUGA) vowed to participate and strongly support the incoming  festival.

The OPA got the assurance from the Ubi growers during the regular meeting of BUGA last December 12, 2019 held at the Casa Rey Francis, Poblacion I, Tagbilaran City.

Esmeraldo “Ondoy” Maligsa, BUGA president said that aside from displaying the Ubi products at the booths of their Local Government Unit (LGUs), the BUGA members would set aside their products to be displayed at the BUGA booth.

However, during the meeting, the Ubi growers reported that we could expect the low supply of Ubi tubers this coming Ubi Festival because some planted Ubi in other municipalities in Bohol have badly affected with disease.

Romulo Campoamor, Ubi grower from Villafuerte, Carmen, Bohol reported that his planted Ubikinampay was affected by the disease that would lost him thousands of pesos.

The ubi growers from Cortes, Dauis, Pilar, Maribojoc, Baclayon, Sikatuna, Dimiao, Antequera, Panglao, Carmen and San Isidro who attended the meeting assured to display their Ubi products in the Ubi Festival.

They asked the leadership of the (PGBh) under the administration of Gov. Art Yap that the venue of the festival would still be at the Bohol Agricultural Promotion Center (BAPC) Ground which is a good place for their buyers.

The Ubi festival has been institutionalized in the province of Bohol through a provincial ordinance which aims to award and recognize the Ubi farmers who have sustained the Ubi industry in the province. By AtoyCosap
