Corn growers urged to plant hybrid corn
Aiming to produce more supply of corn in the province, the Provincial Government of Bohol (PGBh) through the office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) and the Department of Agriculture-Regional field Office (DA-RFO) 7 through the Provincial Agricultural Technology Coordinating Office (PATCO) is promoting for the planting of hybrid corn.
Convincing the Boholano corn growers regarding the high yielding performance of of the hybrid Corn yellow Pioneer variety, the compact corn techno Demo (CCTD) has been conducted to 10 municipalities at 10 hectares (has.) each.
The CCTD was conducted in the barangays of Matin-ao, Carmen town; Tiango, Dauis; Oac, Dimiao; Omjon, Valencia; San Agustin, Sierra Bullones; Datag, Garcia Hernandez; Cantubod, Danao; Malitbog, Dagohoy; Cabanagahan, San Roque, Mabini; and La Hacienda in Alicia.
Abita A. Perez , provincial corn Coordinator in Bohol explained that the areas being used as CCTD are the consolidated lots from several land owners that totaled to 10 hectares per municipality to be planted with hybrid corn.
Perez said the DA has provided the corn seeds and fertilizers for free to the farmers and the OPA has provided technical assistance.
Perez said the standing crop has shown good performance at the Demo farm and it is sure that within this month there would be bountiful harvest.
She said that the CCTD is beneficial to the corn growers because during harvest the DA and the province will not ask share from it.
The provincial corn coordinator said that in Bohol there are about 16,000 has. Of land planted with corn of which the town of Carmen has the biggest corn areas planted.
Perez said corn is next to rice as rice remains number one staple among Boholanos.
Bohol has still maintained its title as ”Rice Basket in Central Visayas” having 47,000 has. Of rainfed and irrigated rice lands of which the town of Pilar is the largest area planted with rice which Malinao Dam is located.(Atoy Cosap)
