Saemaul Undong spirits adopted by Bohol farmers

The quests of the Provincial Government of Bohol (PGBh) through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) and the Korean Government through the Korea Program on International Agriculture (KOPIA) of bringing the rice and vegetable technology in Bohol through the Saemaul Undong spirits have already been supported and adopted by the Boholano farmers.

Dr. Jeong Taek Kee, Country Director, KOPIA and Dr. Sam Lee, Saemaul Undong Expert during the lectures on Japonica Rice and briefing on rice and vegetable adoptability trials in the different municipalities in the province they introduced the Saemaul Undong spirits discipline, self-help and cooperation.

During the briefing on vegetable adoptability trial last Thursday held at the Municipal Hall, Balilihan, Bohol they said that if the Boholano farmers would strongly adopt the Saemaul Undong spirits, the desired developments in agriculture and other endeavors would be achieved.

They thoroughly emphasized that Saemaul Undong is a movement that transformed the lives of the North Korean people during and after the war in 1945 by making the country now as one of the developed countries in the world.

In the same activity, Gov. Edgar M. Chatto in his inspirational message thanked the Korean Government for the continued support given to agriculture in the Philippines especially in the province of Bohol.

Gov. Chatto said that with the technology we have learned from the Countryside Development Program Purok Power Movement (CDP-PPM) and from Saemaul Undong these would be of great help for the increased agriculture production that would alleviate the living condition of the people.

The governor said that when he was a Kabataang Barangay Federation Chairman, mayor, Vice Governor, congressmen and governor, he brought in Balilihan the Bohol Island State University (BISU), Congressional Library, TESDA Training Center, concreted roads among others and as such the people should make use of these opportunities to make them productive in field of their endeavors.

Chatto also encouraged them to be the active players in farm tourism and vegetable supply.

He said the Boholano farmers now must be readied for so many mouths to feed once the Bohol Panglao International Airport would be in operation.

On her message of support, Mayor Maria Puresa V. Chatto said that the Local Government Unit (LGU) in Balilihan has considered agriculture as one of the flagship projects for development.

Mayor Chatto urged the people of Balilihan to be always united for more developments to come in as what has been emphasized in the Saemaul Undong and Contryside Development Program-Purok Power Movement (CDP-PPM).

She thanked the Korean Government and the PGBh for introducing the Saemaul Undong and bringing in the vegetable adoptability trial in her town.

During the action planning facilitated by Jazel Ann Diez, OPA-staff, it was learned that the demo trial which is situated at Del Carmen Weste.

Assistant Provincial Agriculturist Larry M. Pam gas bared that the PGBh has already dispatched one tractor and one cultivator to be used in the land preparation for the adoptability trial on vegetables.

Pamugas said the works will be started immediately of which on Tuesday the plowing of the lot will be done and will be followed by cultivation and plotting the following days respectively.

He said that hopefully by the second week of October the vegetable seedling will be transplanted.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, another briefing on vegetable adoptability trial will be conducted in Taytay, Duero, Bohol.

Tomorrow the Saemaul Undong lecture for Japonica rice farmers will be also conducted by Dr. Jeong Taek Lee and Dr. Sam Lee in Talibon, Bohol. (Atoy Cosap)
